Panoramic Dental Imaging

Panoramic Dental Imaging

Panoramic dental imaging  for pets, often called X-rays, is done under sedation and used as an essential diagnostic tool used by veterinarians to examine the structures within an animal's mouth that are not visible during a standard oral examination.  This is crucial because a significant portion (approximately two-thirds) of a pet's tooth structure, including the roots and surrounding bone, lies hidden beneath the gum line.

What is the difference between panoramic dental imaging and dental radiographs for pets?

  • Panoramic dental imaging can be performed on the day of your consultation visit. The use of sedation medication administered during the appointment will allow for a quick scan of the entire mouth capturing a single image incorporating the upper and lower jaw, all teeth, sinuses, dental arches and surrounding structures.

  • Panoramic dental imaging at your consultation allows for a more accurate assessment of your pet's dental concerns. This enables us to provide a better estimate of the necessary procedures and their duration.

Is panoramic dental imaging available for all pets?

  • Certain medical conditions in animals can limit or contraindicate the use of heavy sedation due to increased risk of complications. These conditions can affect how safely a pet can be sedated for procedures like panoramic dental imaging.

  • Our veterinary team will gather a full history of prior health concerns and perform a full examination to determine if your pet is safe to receive the sedation necessary for panoramic dental imaging.  One of our anesthetists will assist the doctor in performing the imaging as well as monitor your pet vital signs while under sedation.

  • If sedation is not appropriate for your pet, dental imaging will be performed on the day of the dental procedure under full anesthesia.
